Our Hospitals
Our current hospitals already have an enviable reputation:
- Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital carries out unique research and treatments for rare metabolic disorders.
- Booth Hall Children’s Hospital has the largest specialist burns unit in the country.
- Saint Mary’s Hospital for Women and Children is a regional centre for In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), and in 2004 made headlines worldwide after a baby was born using sperm that had been frozen for over 20 years.
- Manchester Royal Infirmary is home to the only specialist clinic in the North West Region for the diagnosis and treatment of patients susceptible to sudden death through genetically inherited cardiac diseases.
- Manchester Royal Eye Hospital carried out the first ever cataract operation in 1934, now over 4,000 operations are performed here each year.
- The University Dental Hospital of Manchester is at the leading edge of research and treatment into cleft lip and palate cases.
Our Children’s Hospitals, Booth Hall and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital see 135,000 patient visits each year across a number of specialties including oncology, haematology, bone marrow transplant, burns, genetics, and orthopaedics.
However...
Our hospital buildings were designed for a different era of healthcare:
- Old buildings and ‘nightingale’ style wards lack space and privacy.
- Our children’s services are split across two sites, meaning that children and staff have to travel to receive and provide treatment.
- Opportunities for parents to remain close to their child during a stay in hospital are limited.
- Patients can travel through miles of hospital corridors to reach the department they need.
The new children's hospital...
Our new children’s hospital will be based in central Manchester alongside the new Saint Mary’s, Manchester Royal Infirmary and the new Eye Hospital. It allows us to combine the services of our existing children’s hospitals in one state-of-the art hospital. With 393 beds across four floors it will be the largest Children’s Hospital in the UK when it opens in 2009.
